Ballou (Maturin M.) is born in Boston.

The son of Rev. Hosea Ballou, Maturin Ballou and begins his career writing for religious magazines, turns to pulp fiction, then enters into a partnership with Boston printer Fredrick Gleason to found a number of newspapers and magazines, including Ballou’s Dollar Monthly in 1854. Ballou also opens a hotel, becomes a dry goods merchant, and serves as the first editor of the Boston Globe in 1872.* He lives at 13 Pinckney Street. Ballou dies in Boston on March 27, 1895.
